History of the Woonsocket  Historical Society

On March 28, 1915, James S. Slater, Frank A. Jackson, Chesman C. Spratt, Carrie Smith Beauregard, Estelle J. Phetteplace and Burlington M. Briggs filed in the Office of the Secretary of State, according to law, their agreement to form a corporation under the name of the Woonsocket Historical Society. The purpose of the society was to collect, collate, preserve and print historical and genealogical material relating to Woonsocket  and vicinity and to encourage historical study and research in accordance with law.

The Woonsocket Historical Society became an active voice in the community but in the late 1930's and early 40's, national issues took over and the charter lapsed. In April of 1947 a group of prominent residents revised the constitution and by-laws of the society. A special meeting of the Woonsocket Historical Society was held in September of 1977 to consider an amendment to the articles of the society to encourage the preservation and protection of historic and cultural properties.

Today the society is again very active in maintaining a museum and archive containing many items, books and original documents and photographs pertaining to the history of our city.
