Laurier Theatre
Always a good show
The Social neighborhood had its Laurier Theatre at 17 Cumberland Street, named for the Canadian Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier. Ads for the Laurier’s second-run and B-movie fare in 1944 bore the slogan, “Always a Good Show”. Those shows sometimes included a breath of home for Woonsocket’s many Canadian immigrants. For instance, a two-night stand that April by the Fameuse Troupe Jean Grimaldi de Montreal, billed as “an all-new French 3-hour Riot of Fun”. All for 65 cents in the orchestra or 55 cents in the balcony. Sadly, the Laurier Theatre fell victim to Hurricane Diane which flooded the Social District in 1955.
